Why Rift
Rift is different because our focus is different in comparison to traditional game engines.
To explain this more, here is an opinionated overview on what popular engines focus on:
- Unity: ease of use, features, platforms.
- Unreal: AAA rendering.
- Godot: scripting / openness.
Rift is not trying to do the above better.
Instead, our focus is entirely different:
- Rift: stability, massive worlds & simulations, ease of use.
If you are looking for features, support on all platforms, or AAA rendering then you’d be better served by existing engines. Rift exists because none of the existing engines seems to focus on the aspects that we care about!
Long term, our focus will remain on gameplay / simulation / scale heavy games that matter.
Rift is not the right engine to build the next Crisis.
We care about games like Minecraft, Terraria, EvE, WoW, LoL, CS, Stardew Valley, Project Zomboid, etc. Indie hits that aim to be popular for decades, or large scale multiplayer games that need to be stable, or even simple 2D games for people who love to work in Rust!
